Father's Day Facts-History-Books-Activities




1. Most people agree that the celebration of Fathers' Day began in the United States. Today, the holiday is recognized in 52 countries.

2. The idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington.

3. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909.

4. The following year, Dodd began the tradition of wearing a red rose to signify a living father and a white rose to honor a deceased one. She wanted to honor her father who had raised his children while being a single parent.

5. Sonora's father was born in June, so that is why she selected June to be the month when the holiday would occur.

6. This holiday honors men that have had a paternal influence in someone's life....fathers, grandfathers, step-fathers, uncles.

7. In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City. Father's Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956.

8. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June.

9. It is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in many countries, including the United States.

10. Fathers' Day is not as big a retail bonanza as Mothers' Day, especially with the flower industry.
