Teaching Tip: Fun Lessons For Your December Classes
We have put together a number of fun and engaging lesson plans for December. They can be adapted to just about any grade level.
1. Create a world map. On the map display symbols of predominant holidays that are celebrated in December. You may also like to use "December Holidays Around the World" workbook.
2. Building off of the map idea, have students make and read graphs of the number of people that celebrated holidays in particular regions of the world.
3. Have students research traditional gifts that their ancestors gave and received for Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa.
4. How Much Oil Would You Need - The student will be able to conduct an experiment to determine how much oil the Macabees would have needed to keep the candles burning for eight days.
5. Probability and Spinning the Dreidel - Students use a Jewish Dreidel to practice probability.
6. A Story for Kwanzaa - The student will be able to write a story about one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa.
7. Show students how poverty can affect the holidays.
8. Have students create an elf cartoon strip.
9. Have students chart Santa's route and chart distance and speed needed.
10. Remember the Partridge in a Pear Tree? Why not engage students in holiday math word problems.
