Other Interesting Facts and Trivia:
- Franklin Roosevelt led the country out of the Great Depression.
- Franklin Roosevelt's profile is found on the U.S. dime. It has appeared on the dime from 1946 - present.
- FDR came from a wealthy family. He was a distant cousin of Theodore Roosevelt as well as Eleanor Roosevelt, who he later married while a student at Columbia Law School.
- After beginning a political career, Roosevelt was struck with polio. Within 2 days, he couldn't walk and was confined to a wheel chair.
- In 1932, Roosevelt promised a New Deal for Americans which included help for farmers and better working conditions for most Americans.
- FDR was a strong wartime leader. After the attack at Pearl Harbor, the U.S. declared war on Japan. Germany and Italy declared war on the United States.
- FDR died of a stroke shortly into his 4th term. One month later, the Allies won the war in Europe.
- Roosevelt is the only president to serve more than 2 terms. He was elected 4 times. In 1951, Congress passed the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution limiting presidents to two terms.
- Eleanor Roosevelt was a busy First Lady. She wanted to make sure that African Americans, women, immigrants and all other Americans were part of the New Deal.

Teaching Tip: Lesson Plan Ideas For January

Start by visiting some of our key worksheet areas for January:

Ultimate January Worksheet Series

Here are some great ideas for adding the theme of January to your classes. Look at some complete lessons for you.
1. Louis Braille's birthday is on January 4th. Have students write a story that describes how their lives would be different if they couldn't communicate with any one.

2. Isaac Newton's birthday is on January 4th. Try our 1,2,3 Newton and Me activity.

3. Complete Dr. King's legendary speech in the context of today's world with this worksheet.

4. January 9th to 16th is National Letter Writing Week. You will find a number of ideas in our Writing Lesson Plans page.

5. January 11th is Amelia Earhart Day. Have students use a graphic organizer to describe the qualities of Amelia Earhart. Have students describe who is today's modern day equivalent to Amelia Earhart.

6. On January 14th, 1783 the American Revolutionary War ended. Have students write about the experience of a solider that is on the frontline preparing for battle and finds out the war has ended.

7. January 16th is National Freedom of Religion Day. Create a world map that points out the major religions followed by geography.

8. January 23rd is National Handwriting Day. Give students 15 seconds to write a paragraph of your choice. Have them rest for a few minutes. Have them write the same paragraph again, but now give them 5 minutes. Compare.

9. January 29th is National Puzzle Day. Have students complete printable puzzles.
