The 2014 Sochi, Russia, Winter Olympics. This is the 22nd Winter Olympics. The games will be held February 7-23, 2014. The Paralympic Games will be held March 7-16, 2014.  Sochi, considered the longest city in Europe (approximately 148 kilometers or 92 miles), is a resort city in the Krasnodar Krai territory.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens-1843




A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens was published in London in 1843 and immediately sold out. He wrote the story in just two months, beginning in October, 1843 and finishing at the end of November. It was the first of five Christmas books by Dickens. Its successors were The Chimes (1844), The Cricket on the Hearth (1845), The Battle of Life (1846), and The Haunted Man and the Ghost’s Bargain (1848).

On this day in 1789, a national Thanksgiving Day is observed as recommended by President George Washington. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed it a national holiday.

P.D. Eastman Celebration


Today we celebrate children’s author P.D. Eastman, creator of “Are You My Mother?” and “Go, Dog, Go!” among other classic titles, born on this date in 1909. Eastman, who died in 1986, met Theodore “Dr. Seuss” Geisel in World War II and later published books under the Dr. Seuss brand at Random House.

This is Armistice Day or Remembrance Day or Veterans Day or Victory Day or World War I Memorial Day. The name of this special day may be different in different places throughout many nations; but its significance is the same.
It was on this day at 11 a.m. in 1918 that World War I ceased. The Allied and Central Powers signed an armistice agreement at 5 a.m. in Marshal Foch’s railway car in the Forest of Compiegne, France.

Many still bow their heads in remembrance at the 11th hour of this the 11th day of the 11th month.
